Executive DBA vs Online DBA: which doctorate fits your career?
In short: an Executive DBA is a cohort-based, professionally focused doctorate delivered in intensive residencies; an Online DBA is a distance-learning doctorate designed for asynchronous study. Both award a doctoral qualification, but the experience, research training and time commitment are quite different.
What both programmes have in common
Both are Level 8 doctoral qualifications on the UK RQF (or EQF Level 8 in Europe). Both require an original contribution to professional knowledge, usually a 60,000–80,000 word thesis or a portfolio of research outputs. Both take three to six years part-time in practice, even when the advertised length is shorter.

The Executive DBA is structured around a cohort. The Online DBA is designed for candidates who cannot commit to fixed residencies. Materials are asynchronous, supervision is scheduled around your calendar, and cohorts are usually more loosely coupled. The strength of the model is flexibility. The trade-off is that the doctorate takes more self-driven momentum to complete.

Choose the Executive DBA if you value structured peer learning, can protect two to four residencies a year, and want a clear cadence to your doctorate. Choose the Online DBA if your work makes residencies impractical, if you have already done substantial research or writing at master's level, and if you have a supportive line manager and household who understand that a doctorate takes years.
Cost and time
Executive DBA fees are usually higher because of the delivery model and the residency costs. Online DBA fees are lower on paper but the total cost — including the time to completion — often converges. Ask any provider for the completion rate and the median time to submission before you commit.
