    Taught master's vs MRes vs doctorate: which route fits you?

    In short: a taught master's builds subject depth through coursework; an MRes builds research capability through a supervised project; a doctorate produces an original contribution to knowledge. Choosing between them is about what you want to do next — not about prestige.

    The taught master's (MSc, MA, LLM, MBA)

    Typically one year full-time in the UK, or one-to-two years across Europe. Assessment is exams, essays and a dissertation. The right choice if you want a strong subject foundation and a credential recognised widely by employers.

    The MRes (Master of Research)

    One year full-time. About one third taught methods and two thirds an assessed research project. The right choice if you plan to progress to a doctorate and want to demonstrate research capability first.

    The doctorate (PhD, DBA, EdD, DProf)

    Three to six years part-time in practice. Requires an original contribution to knowledge, examined by a thesis and a viva voce. Choose an academic doctorate (PhD) if your goal is scholarly research; a professional doctorate (DBA, EdD, DProf) if your goal is rigorous applied research grounded in your professional practice.

    Sequencing

    You do not always need all three. Many candidates go directly from a strong taught master's or long professional practice into a doctorate. An MRes is genuinely useful when your bachelor's did not include a substantial research project and your target doctorate requires evidence of research capability.

    Is a professional doctorate 'lower' than a PhD?
    No. Both are Level 8. They are designed for different purposes.
    Can I do a doctorate without a master's?
    Some professional doctorates admit senior professionals under APEL. Academic PhDs almost always require a master's.
