APEL & Prior learning

Can work experience count toward a UK master's degree?

In short: yes, in specific circumstances. UK universities can admit candidates without a bachelor's degree to a taught master's when they can evidence substantial, relevant, recent experience through a formal APEL claim. It is not automatic and it varies by institution and by programme.

    What APEL is

APEL stands for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning. It sits alongside APCL (Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning) under the broader banner of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). APEL is used when someone can demonstrate they have already achieved the learning outcomes of part of a programme — usually through work, self-study, or professional practice.

The QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) publishes guidance on how UK providers should assess RPL. The specific rules on how much prior learning can be counted, and how it is evidenced, are set by each institution and reflected in their academic regulations.

When APEL enables entry to a master's without a bachelor's

Most UK master's programmes require an honours degree, usually 2:2 or above, plus subject-relevant background. APEL is the mechanism universities use when a candidate does not have that degree but does have long-standing senior experience in the subject. The classic cases are: an experienced manager applying to an MBA, a senior clinician to an MSc, a long-standing legal practitioner to an LLM.

Universities typically look for five years or more of directly relevant experience, sustained responsibility, and evidence that the applicant has been operating at a graduate level of judgement. Some programmes also expect a written assessed piece — a portfolio, a reflective statement, or a small research proposal — as part of the claim.

    What evidence you need

An APEL claim is a curated file, not a CV. It should include:

    • A structured CV mapped to the learning outcomes of the target programme.
    • Employer letters describing the scope and level of your responsibilities.
    • Samples of professional work you have led, redacted where necessary.
    • Evidence of continuing professional development, industry qualifications, or published work.
    • A reflective statement linking your experience to the programme's academic content.

    What APEL cannot do

APEL cannot substitute for a regulated professional qualification. It cannot bypass visa or language requirements. It cannot guarantee admission — the university's admissions committee remains the decision-maker. And it cannot usually be used to skip a doctorate's core research training.

    How MYUNI helps

MYUNI reviews your background against the target programme's admissions criteria, identifies the strongest APEL angle, and helps you structure the evidence file. We do not represent you to any institution, and we cannot guarantee outcomes. The university remains the decision-maker.

    Frequently asked questions

Can APEL replace an entire bachelor's degree?
Not usually. It can substitute for the entry criterion of one, but you still complete the master's in full.
How long does building an APEL claim take?
For most candidates, four to eight weeks of focused work to assemble evidence and draft the reflective statement.
    Is APEL available for doctorates?
APEL can support entry to some executive doctorates (DBA, DProf) where senior professional experience is expected; academic PhDs generally require a master's.
