Can I do a UK master's with a Pakistani bachelor's degree?

    Pakistani degrees are assessed in the UK every year in large numbers, and the process is well trodden. The outcome turns on two things: whether the awarding body is recognised in Pakistan, and how the award compares to UK standards.

    Short answer

    Frequently, yes. The first requirement is that the awarding university or campus is recognised by Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC), which publishes recognised campuses and attests degrees. On comparability, UK NARIC — now UK ENIC — publicly reported that Pakistani four-year Bachelor degrees awarded from 2016 onward were moved to British Bachelor degree standard; that is published comparability guidance rather than a guarantee about any current application. Individual UK universities decide master's entry and may impose subject and grade requirements of their own.

    What this means in practice

    HEC recognition is the foundation. A UK admissions team needs to establish that the awarding university or campus was recognised at the time of your study, and HEC's published list of recognised campuses is the authority for that. HEC's degree attestation service is the national process by which a Pakistani degree is formally authenticated, and many UK institutions expect to see it.

    Comparability is the second layer. The published guidance on four-year Bachelor degrees awarded from 2016 describes how those awards are positioned against British Bachelor degree standard. It is guidance about a category of qualifications, and it should not be read as a decision about an individual application, still less as a promise about what a particular university will accept today.

    The third layer is the university itself. Even where comparability is favourable, a master's programme may require a specific subject background, a minimum CGPA or division, or particular prerequisite modules. Those requirements are set programme by programme.

    Whether the awarding university or campus appears in HEC's recognised list, and whether the programme was covered by that recognition when you studied.

    The duration and structure of the award — two-year, four-year and more recent programme structures are treated differently — and the credit volume recorded on the transcript.

    Your CGPA or division, converted against the institution's own published conversion practice, together with the subject content of the degree.

    Attestation and document authenticity, which UK institutions take seriously for all international applications.

    Where the institution asks for it, a current UK ENIC Statement of Comparability for your specific award.

    When it may work

    You hold a four-year Bachelor degree awarded from 2016 onward by an HEC-recognised university, with a good CGPA and a subject that aligns with the master's you are applying to.

    Your degree is attested through HEC and your transcript shows credit hours and grades clearly.

    You obtain a Statement of Comparability where the admissions team is unfamiliar with your awarding institution.

    When it may not work

    The awarding campus is not on HEC's recognised list, or was not recognised during your period of study.

    You hold a two-year Bachelor degree, which is generally compared at a level below a British Bachelor degree and typically points towards a bridging or top-up route rather than direct master's entry.

    Your CGPA falls below the programme's published threshold, or the subject is too distant from a specialised master's.

    An example of how cases differ

    A graduate with a four-year BS in electrical engineering awarded in 2019 by an HEC-recognised university, attested, with a strong CGPA, applies to a UK MSc in the same field. This is a conventional application and the remaining questions are grades and programme-specific prerequisites.

    An applicant holding a two-year BA from the same era faces a different question. The realistic route is usually to complete further study that brings the profile to Bachelor-degree standard before applying for a master's — and whether any particular institution accepts an alternative is theirs to decide.
