Can I do a master's with a diploma?

First establish the level of your diploma

A postgraduate diploma (PGDip) sits at master's level and typically represents most of a taught master's without the dissertation. Holders are frequently admitted to the corresponding master's and awarded credit for the taught component.

An undergraduate diploma — an HND, a Diploma of Higher Education, many national diplomas — sits below bachelor's level. It represents part of a first cycle, not the whole of it.

Professional diplomas from industry bodies vary enormously. Some are mapped to a national framework level and carry clear standing; others are unregulated and carry none. The mapping, not the issuing body's prestige, is what an admissions office looks at.

When direct master's entry may apply

With a postgraduate diploma in a cognate subject, direct entry to the corresponding master's is routine, and many institutions allow the diploma to count towards the award so that only the dissertation remains.

With an undergraduate-level diploma plus substantial senior professional experience, some institutions — most often in business and management — will consider an application through an experience-based route. This is discretionary and far from universal.

When it does not apply

An undergraduate diploma alone, without experience and without a top-up, will not normally satisfy postgraduate entry at a recognised institution, whatever a recruitment agent may suggest.

Where the target country's law requires a formally recognised first-cycle qualification for second-cycle entry, the institution may simply have no discretion.

The usual sequence

For an undergraduate-level diploma, the conventional and fastest defensible route is a top-up year to a bachelor's, followed by direct master's entry. This is often quicker overall than pursuing a contested experience-based claim, and leaves a far more portable qualification behind.

Where the diploma was awarded abroad, obtain a comparability view first: institutions will benchmark it against their own framework before any of the above is discussed.
