RPL, APEL and APCL: what the terms mean

RPL is the umbrella term for assessing prior learning against the entry requirements or learning outcomes of a particular programme. The assessment is about learning that can be evidenced, not simply time spent in a role.

APEL — Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning — concerns learning developed through professional practice, projects, independent study or other experience. APCL — Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning — concerns learning already assessed through a qualification, module or recognised training award. Institutions may use different labels, but the distinction between experiential and certificated learning remains useful.

What an institution normally assesses

For APCL, an institution usually compares transcripts, credit volume, academic level, subject content and learning outcomes. For APEL, it may require a reflective account, work products, employer verification, professional qualifications and an outcome-by-outcome evidence map.

The institution applies its own rules on relevance, academic level, currency and maximum credit. A positive preliminary indication therefore means that a route may be worth investigating; it does not mean that any application or claim will be accepted.
