Is my Philippine degree recognised in the UK?
There is no single act of recognition that makes a Philippine degree valid in the United Kingdom. What exists is a comparison — carried out by UK ENIC, by an admissions team, or by both — of the award you hold against UK qualification standards.

Short answer
A Philippine bachelor's degree is not automatically treated as equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree simply because it carries the same name. Two checks decide the outcome: whether the awarding higher education institution and programme are recognised by CHED in the Philippines, and how the award compares to UK standards, which UK ENIC can state formally. A UK ENIC comparison informs an admissions decision but does not bind it — the university decides.
What this means in practice
Recognition is a two-country question. The first half sits in the Philippines: the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is the authority for higher education, and its HEI directory records which institutions are recognised and what they are authorised to award. If the awarding body is not in that record, a UK institution has nothing verifiable to assess.
The second half sits in the UK. There is no government body that approves individual foreign degrees for use in Britain. UK ENIC is the UK's national information centre for international qualifications, and it issues a Statement of Comparability stating the UK level a qualification is considered comparable to. That statement is respected, widely used and frequently requested — but it is advice, not an entitlement.
A great deal of confusion comes from treating a comparability statement as a decision. It is a reference point that an admissions tutor weighs alongside subject content, grades, the standing of the awarding institution and the specific requirements of the programme you have applied to.
What is actually checked
Whether the awarding institution appears in CHED's directory as a recognised higher education institution, and whether the particular programme was covered by that recognition when you studied it.
The structure of the award: total duration, the subjects taken, the volume of study behind each, and whether the programme included a substantive final-year project or thesis.
The academic level of the content rather than the title. Philippine programmes vary considerably in structure, and a four-year professional programme and a shorter award may compare very differently even when both are described as bachelor's degrees.
Subject alignment with the programme you are applying to, and the grades achieved. A degree judged comparable in level can still be refused because the subject content does not meet a specific programme's prerequisites.
When it may work
You hold a completed four-year bachelor's degree from an institution clearly recorded as recognised by CHED, you have a full transcript, and you are applying to a UK master's in a cognate subject. This is the most straightforward profile, and it is common.
You hold a Philippine professional degree with a clear final-year research or capstone component and can evidence the subject content required by the target programme.
You obtain a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability before applying, so that the admissions team is not asked to judge an unfamiliar award without a reference point.
When it may not work
The awarding institution cannot be found in CHED's records, or the programme was delivered by a body that was not authorised to award it. This is where applications fail most decisively, and no comparability statement can repair it.
The award is shorter or structurally lighter than a UK bachelor's degree, in which case it may be compared to a level below a UK bachelor's and may support entry to a top-up or bridging route rather than direct postgraduate entry.
The subject does not align with the target programme, or the programme is professionally regulated in the UK and governed by requirements the university cannot waive.
Documents cannot be verified — missing transcripts, unexplained gaps or translations without certification.
Documents to prepare
Your original degree or diploma certificate and the official transcript showing every subject, credit value and grade, with certified translations where the documents are not in English.
Evidence of the programme's duration and total study volume, which the transcript should make explicit.
Where a licensure examination is relevant to your field, the record of it, which can help demonstrate the professional standing of the award.
Proof that the awarding institution and the specific programme were recognised at the time you studied, taken from the national regulator rather than from the institution's own marketing.
Where the institution asks for one, a current UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. Order it early: it takes time, and admissions teams rarely wait.
An example of how cases differ
A graduate holding a four-year BS from a long-established CHED-recognised university, with a complete transcript and a final-year project, applies to a UK master's in the same field. The admissions team has everything it needs; the realistic remaining questions are grades and subject alignment.
A second applicant holds an award from a provider that appears in no CHED record, with a transcript that does not show credit values. Here the problem is not comparability but verification — and it must be resolved at source in the Philippines before any UK assessment is meaningful.

Frequently asked questions
- Does UK ENIC decide whether a university admits me?
- No. UK ENIC states how your qualification compares to UK standards. Admission is decided by the university, which may set higher or additional requirements.
- Do I always need a Statement of Comparability?
- Not always. Many UK universities assess Philippine qualifications themselves. Some ask for one, and it is generally useful where the awarding institution is less familiar to the admissions team.
- Will a Philippine bachelor's get me onto a UK master's?
- It may. Where the degree is from a CHED-recognised institution and compares to a UK bachelor's in the relevant subject, postgraduate entry is a normal route — but the decision is the university's alone.
